John Carter Sequel: Taylor Kitsch gives a shout out to “Best damn fans on Earth (and Mars)”

Other Stuff

Taylor Kitsch has once again shown a touch of class to John Carter Sequel fans by sending them a signed poster inscribed “To the Best Damn Fans on Earth (and Mars)” and “No Regrets”.    Kitsch has consistently shown support to the fan movement that grew up after John Carter landed with a thud in US Theaters, but has since garnered a highly motivated a vocal fan base.  The John Carter Sequel “Back to Barsoom” Facebook Group continues to add new members at a current rate of 350 per week, and will reach a total of 10,000 in the next few days.   Fans have also organized JohnCarterTwo.com, an internet forum open to anyone, and BacktoBarsoom.com, a website featuring fan art, videos, and commentary.

Thanks to Über-fan Rebecca Baeder Garland and all the members of the John Carter Sequel “Back to Barsoom” Group for sending this to us.  Good luck at Comic-con!

OK thanks for your comments. But there is a difference here. Even though as you stated you didn’t like the last four Harry Potter films they at least got made. All eight of them and half of them you enjoyed. With John Carter we got one film (or two if you count the Asylum version) and that’s it. As for David Yates I’m not defending him but I’ll say this for him: One JK Rowling obviously approved of him and the changes he made, something that sadly didn’t happen with here since Edgar Rice Burroughs isn’t with us and ERB Inc apparently according fo their defenders didn’t have any say over-or more likely didn’t care to do since they-like so many-bought Stanton’s bull. And second Yates didn’t give the proverbial “finger” to Rowling or her fans. He didn’t belittle her talent in interviews as Stanton did with Burroughs or or ignore the fans the author had-as small a group as they are. At least I’m not sure he did-if you can provide interviews where he did I’ll retract my comment.

As for liking the movie well great. But why not read the books? Are you afraid that you might like them and realize why some of us contrarians don’t care for Stanton’s wholsesale trashing? I mean I have read the Potter books and while I haven’t reread them over and over can understand the point of view of fans that possibly weren’t happy with them since I did know how good the source material is. Give the books a chance and you might enjoy them, even though you’ll have to forget Shape Shifter Shang and the useless dead wife and kid. In fact that’s already an improvement. Finally no I don’t expect John Carter to be rebooted to please me nor do I want it to be. And the books are there and that won’t change. But with Potter most people talk about them as separate entities-Rowling’s books and the movies. Most talk about John Carter is only about how badly the movie did. That’s the sad part of the whole thing and as I said earlier Stanton taking down Burroughs’ legacy with him.

  • I have read what MCR has been saying for a while now and I do have some sympathy for his position. I was an avid Harry potter fan of the books having read them multiple times; I loved the first 4 movies and was in agreement with the changes from the book the movie made. But when David Yates took over and directed the last 4 movies, I had a real problem with the choices made. It made it hard for me to enjoy the movies. Now the shoe is on the other foot so to speak, for I love John Carter the movie and I have not read any of Edgar Rice Burroughs books. I am not suffering from the inevitable disappoint that MCR appears to be suffering from. I realized that there was scant chance that the Harry Potter movies would be re-booted and made to my liking anytime soon. MCR needs to realize that the same is true for Princess of Mars. I am a true fan of the movie and I feel Taylor Kitsch made a wonderful John Carter. No matter how much you complain about the movie, I don’t see a re-boot with your approval for script and casting on the horizon. Let it go, just as I had to. I will always have the books. They are right there on my shelf ready for reading. That is my comfort.

Maybe because this film is based on ERB’s BOOK! (Sorry for the caps but if this film is HIS MOVIE…) It would be different if this had been an original creation but it wasn’t. It was Stanton butchering another man’s creation and then basically saying that no one-NO ONE-would mind. I understand yes there wasn’t a huge Harry Potter fan base to put on pressure but Stanton’s attitude it seems from day one has been is that no one has read the books or if they have they won’t mind his handling of it. Now I guess unlike Daria-who I don’t know if she ever read the books or even has picked one up-that to me is offensive and insutling as someone who has read the books. If Stanton wants to buddy up to the fans of “HIS MOVIE” then fine. But don’t defend him for his arrogance from before. It was that arrogance that was more responsible for this movie bombing and taking ERB’s legacy down with him than anything else-more than the poor marketing even.

Uh-uh. And where was the appreciation before the movie opened? Stanton himself made it clear there was no fans and that he didn’t care about them then and only after the movie basically failed then he suddenly turned into a big fan supporter? I know this sounds even more contratian but do you think if the film had become the big hit at the box office Stanton would have been appreciative? Probably not.

MCR the “fans” you refer to are ERB fans and the “fans” Daria refers to are fans of the movie. There is some overlap, but there are also fans of one who are not fans of the other. Stanton has, assuredly, been supportive to fans of the movie and Daria is pretty much the #1 fan of all, having seen the movie something like 35 times in theaters.

As for whether Stanton would have been so warm to fans if the film had succeeded ……I think so. You always go back to his comments about there not being enough ERB fans to create the kind of “please the fans” pressure that directors of Harry Potter and Hunger Games face, but I don’t really see how that has anything to do with his relations with fans of HIS MOVIE. I do think his handling of interview questions about ERB fans was “inartful” even if accurate.

  • Now, can we get a better photo of this? That way we can all “have a copy of this. Thanx !

    Working on that!

I know this sounds even more contratian but do you think if the film had become the big hit at the box office Stanton would have been appreciative? Probably not. I hate to say it but probably the only reason Stanton has put on this new act is because the fans of this film are the only people who seem to believe him. The press has been gleeful-and I’ll admit too gleeful-in portraying him as either out of control or clueless about filmmaking, the critics already passed their judgment and Disney just wants him to go back to Pixar and let Lassiter handle him.

That said I do think Dotar does deserve the poster. He’s at least been tireless in trying to support ERB and this movie-and it’s director-and he deserves that respect.

  • I’ve been supporting Taylor’s career since the days of ‘Snakes On A Plane’ (*well* before ‘John Carter’) and welcome all the new fans like Rebecca. I’m glad that Taylor appreciates his fans’ support. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind that of all the items he was told would go toward the raffle, the group keeps the mounted poster(s) to be used for conventions and group events. When not in official use, it should be in the hands of Michael since he started the group. Next stop…Comic-Con!

  • Stanton has Tweeted his appreciation to John Carter fans. And JC is obviously a passion project for him. Why would anyone bash him?

  • That poster is a wonderful nod from Taylor and should rightly be in the possession of our own Dotar Sojat, to be fair. No one is a bigger, more long-time fan than either my sis or myself and we think that the person who made this group possible is the person deserving of it. (A hi-rez pic of it for the rest of us o print out would be nice, though). And Andrew Stanton has shown time and again that he is thoroughly supportive and appreciative of “John Carter” fans and, having met him, I know that first-hand.

  • From all reports Taylor is a nice guy. It’s great that he appreciates the support from the fans. I would say Andrew Stanton appreciates and supports the fans, too, as he could very easily had Disney make YouTube pull down the fan trailers. I’ve also seen him smiling and comfortable around the fans in pics and folks have said he’s thanked them for the support.

  • To coin a phrase from the books as said to D. Thoris from J. Carter (While I still breath, There is Hope).

  • Kitsch seems like a nice guy and at least is appreciative of the fans it seems. That’s more than can be said for Disney or others-like certain directors. (trying to avoid Bashing Stanton but can’t! 🙂 )

  • What a nice guy.
Now, can we get a better photo of this? That way we can all “have a copy of this. Thanx !

  • Khanada — Jan corrected me, and I corrected the post. I think it’s a good idea to keep it. I would really love it if somebody could get a really good picture of it so we could do something with the image. 😉

  • My understanding is this won’t be a raffle prize. It’s addressed to us so we’re keeping it inside the campaign, which I really think is a better idea than raffling it off. My 2 cents.
