More Harry Knowles on John Carter: “Euphoric…..spectacular……a great film-maker has emerged”

Other Stuff

Yesterday JCF reported on initial comments from Ain’t it Cool News Founder/Editor Harry Knowles after seeing a private screening of John Carter.  Embargoed from doing a full review by Disney, Knowles announced yesterday that he was permitted to tweet — and tweet he did. He continued to comment on the film via twitter well into the evening last night.  Here is Harry’s full twitter feed from yesterday……it’s blog style, most recent tweet at the top, oldest at the bottom.

Also — for the lazy among us … here is a compendium of the best quotes — you can read them in context below.

  • JOHN CARTER is spectacular. The second that Edgar sits to begin reading Uncle Jack’s diary… pure magic till the end.
  • Before seeing the film, I didn’t like Taylor Kitsch or Lynn Collins at all. But as introduced in film… ideal. They became the characters.
  • If you love the source material – there are many moments that’ll bring tears when you see it brought to life.
  • You 13 year old will lose their mind
  • Felt like 2 hours + in that full feeling way, but I could have sat and watched it 3 more times that day.
  • I would say, any way to see it is the the best way. I saw 3D and loved it, but I like 3D. This is a cinematic event.
  • Pretty spectacular. The full Ape sequence is amazing. Big & small scenes work wonderfully. Warhoon battle is euphoric
  • I hated him in WOLVERINE, here I never thought once about that – he just became JOHN CARTER.
  • his Tars Tarkas is just awesome. From the first moment he sees John leap
  • the arena is straight out of A PRINCESS OF MARS which George stole his version from. This is far better.
  • do you love stories that make you reconsider the possibilities of the dots of light in the sky? You’ll love this.
  • a great filmmaker has emerged in a new medium for him. Be there.
  • tell them it’s about Action, Adventure, Romance & a strange world filled with amazing characters brought to life by WALLE dir!
  • I think saying a new STAR WARS is the wrong thing. This is JOHN CARTER the 1st of the Barsoom trilogy. It is its own thing.
Herewith — the full twitter feed.

This is Kaor Knowles signing out. Gotta show the missus NOTORIOUS for the first time… may love be in your life tonight

@CraigKoban I think saying a new STAR WARS is the wrong thing. This is JOHN CARTER the 1st of the Barsoom trilogy. It is its own thing.

@CraigKoban I have always felt that JOHN CARTER had a great potential. LOTR, STAR WARS… ERBdom should blossom

@powerfuldog it feels like an Andrew Stanton film, but if he directed JOHN CARTER OF MARS and a studio called it JOHN CARTER & it was great!

@arombough They bring the Therns up from Books 2 & 3 to create a unified trilogy. Moved stuff around, but the soul of everything is right

@DJ_Callyman I think of them as Brandy, can’t stomach Scotch personally

@CraigKoban yes, but the denizens of Mars always call it BARSOOM – which is their native term for their world.

@RandyBuechele both John and Dejah were in that crapfest, but they scrubbed real good!

@AustinCFilms tell them it’s about Action, Adventure, Romance & a strange world filled with amazing characters brought to life by WALLE dir!

@danielmcfadin @slashfilm it really is when it is overt and unmentioned that it feels like theft.

@danielmcfadin @slashfilm well, Lucas has always been fairly forthcoming with his inspirations, Cameron admitted the same to me.

@Ghandi05 I accept it. Things have weight, gravity. So I’m pleased.

@Fellmeister promise 45 minutes of going down on her afterwards and if you’re good, she’ll be good.

@TakashiMifune @massawyrm is off being a superstar screenwriter/novelist at the moment – but he’s anxious to return to obscurity, giggle

@Andrew_Clabaugh @m_giacchino Scorekeeper on AICN is going to have our first full breakdown of the score. Can’t wait to hear it out of film!

@Ed_Travis depends, phenomenons can rarely be anticipated. If it latches onto a new generation’s soul anything is possible. It has potential

@WilliamWomack59 I’m concerned about that, but ignore it, a great filmmaker has emerged in a new medium for him. Be there.

@killerbuttonfly do you love stories that make you reconsider the possibilities of the dots of light in the sky? You’ll love this.

@PArriola if you can ever like 3D, I’d say 3D. If you hate 3D you should always go 2D… right?

@danielmcfadin @slashfilm the arena is straight out of A PRINCESS OF MARS which George stole his version from. This is far better.

@TheRealMattC his Tars Tarkas is just awesome. From the first moment he sees John leap

@abellwillring I hated him in WOLVERINE, here I never thought once about that – he just became JOHN CARTER.

@cafeenjarrito Pretty spectacular. The full Ape sequence is amazing. Big & small scenes work wonderfully. Warhoon battle is euphoric

@mike_is_bored well,my vision was always a shared vision with the various helmers we had. I dreamt of 4 different versions. This is complete

@RorMachine It takes liberties, but liberties necessary for making it a cinematic trilogy and not just a literary one.

@dave_conklin I would say, any way to see it is the the best way. I saw 3D and loved it, but I like 3D. This is a cinematic event.

@roland943 felt like 2 hours + in that full feeling way, but I could have sat and watched it 3 more times that day.

@atomikart if you love the source material – there are many moments that’ll bring tears when you see it brought to life.

@slashfilm depends how it goes. Carter has release room to find its audience and grow. But the toys should be everywhere, fast food?

@allflicker used to date someone on that show, but no, never watched it.

Feel free to ask me anything about the film. It’s a day for love.

Before seeing the film, I didn’t like Taylor Kitsch or Lynn Collins at all. But as introduced in film… ideal. They became the characters

The marketing for JOHN CARTER from Disney is leaving much to be desired, but once you see Tars & Carter interacting, suffering of Sola. Wow

@Christo70 No, they feel it is too early for reviews – they’ll probably take the leash off me once they decide when they want reviews to hit

JOHN CARTER is spectacular. The second that Edgar sits to begin reading Uncle Jack’s diary… pure magic till the end.

Ok – I was told that while I can’t review JOHN CARTER – I can tweet about it today.
